First the void, second the spark: a new vocabulary for proximity
We are fascinated by the idea that language reveals something about our psyche – or perhaps even determines it. With a different set of words available, can one communicate different ideas? What new realms of feeling can be inhabited? Does having a new word for a feeling make us feel it more?
For this performance, Cosmophage Collective captures emotions by giving them new words that don’t currently exist in English. Each word will be shared with diner-guests through dishes, creating a series of edible mnemonics. The diner-guests will consume and digest each word, learning it, interpreting it, making it their own, and perhaps even using it into the future...
We believe that language is learned the way food is tasted; a web of connotations and associations surrounds each word. Our relationship to language is a reflection of our experiences. For this performance, we merge these two worlds of perception.
